Ulan-Ulan Falls, Biliran | Almeria’s Misty Cascade

Reading Time: 5 minutes

Almeria, Biliran: After visiting the island of Sambawan in Maripipi, we just considered Ulan-Ulan Falls as a side trip, but this waterfall isn’t just a detour, it is a destination in itself.

Come and join us on this exciting trip to the island province of Biliran!

Table of Contents

Rice Terraces of Sampao

Biliran, is one of the newest provinces in the country and was granted provincial status in 1992. Don’t be deceived by its rustic vibe because Biliran has its own attractions that will impress you and would make you want to explore the island more.

From Kawayan Port, we traveled back down to Almeria before ascending a mountain pass that leads to Brgy. Sampao.

En route to the jump-off point, we were greeted with the rice terraces of Brgy. Sampao with the towering Mt. Panamao (1050+) in the background.

This man-made agricultural feat was hand-crafted by early settlers and handed down to the present generation.

In the Middle of Paradise

The hike was just a quick one from the registration area. But exercise caution as the trail might get even more slippery during monsoon seasons.

As soon as you arrive near the catch basin, you will quickly find yourself in the middle of paradise.

Ulan-ulan Falls got its name from the word “Ulan” because of the rain-like drizzle the waterfall produces as the water falls down from a 25-meter-high crevice into a cold catch basin.

When you come to a waterfall, mist blowing in your face and arms, do you stop and take a moment to be one with nature? Do you surrender yourself and be lulled by the sound of gushing water?

If you want to swim, walk upstream for about 10 minutes where you will see the Recoletos Falls, It is the more minor cascade but it has a huge basin perfect for taking a dip.

Ulan-Ulan Falls is just one of the many waterfalls in the province of Biliran. Make sure to stay a little longer to enjoy all the province has to offer.

Biliran: PH #71!
