Camiguin Norte (not to be confused with Camiguin in Mindanao) is a surprisingly fun detour as it has so much to offer albeit being hard to reach (ehem giant waves). We were greeted by Dolphins along the way, and at some months even Humpback Whales (Lumba-Lumba as locals call them) come to play here.

Too bad the weather only got better a few hours before we left for Babuyan Claro and what greeted us when the clouds parted is something one shouldn't miss. The mystical island of Camiguin Norte is definitely worth a revisit and I think I will be back for more!

It all seems safe at first, but this is actually the crater of Mt. Camiguin De Babuyanes (712+), one of the active volcanoes in the country. 🌋🌋🌋

Due to bad weather on our way to Babuyan Claro we had to make a detour first at Camiguin Norte. We took this chance to scale the crater of the Camiguin De Babuyanes Volcano.

This is an active stratovolcano that is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire. Locals were reluctant at first to guide us to the crater as the trail's replete with snakes such as Pit Vipers, the looming bad weather, and it is now heavily forested since the last group who visited the volcano was about a year ago.

Everything still feels like a dream: The beauty of

Everything still feels like a dream: The beauty of the conical Smith Volcano, places second only to Mayon among our country's active volcanoes but scaling the nearly flattened crater felt like something taken straight out of a daydream.

The island itself is hard to reach and takes about 7-8hrs by boat from Sta. Ana, Cagayan. Scaling the volcano is another story. We started our trek inside the forests at the base of Mt. Babuyan Claro (Chinteb na Wasay) that ensues into a barren lava field. This field eventually ends up on a sparsely vegetated slope filled with sharp pyroclastic materials, and characterized by the super abundance of pitcher plants and a few shrubs. Their is no trail at all and we just have to follow the contour of the volcano. A few hundred meters from the summit the trail somewhat turns into a steep scree slope reminiscent of that of Mt. Mayon with some boulders along the way that's as big as houses.

At the top, you will be rewarded with an unobstructed view of the island. From where we were standing one can still see the fields of lava ejected by the volcano from its previous eruptions.

To those who have braved the mighty seas of the Babuyan Islands, one can easily say that the coves of Sibang, Caniwara and Cababaan of Calayan Island, forms one of the most picturesque seascape in the country. Flanked by towering cliffs carpeted in shrubs and windswept trees, the fine white sand of the cove is perpetually hugged by the ebb and flow of the Luzon Strait.
