Bega Falls, Agusan Del Sur | Prosperidad’s Waterfall of No Return

Reading Time: 6 minutes

Prosperidad, Agusan Del Sur: Drop. Dead. Gorgeous. – That’s what people back in the day liked to call the sheer-sized Bega Falls in the ironically named Brgy. Mabuhay, because of the fact that a number of men in the area have died there. (That’s according to legends)

Well, I lived to tell the tale. Let us take you to a waterfall in Agusan Del Sur that exceeded my expectations because of its massive cascading waters!

Mabuhay!

Coming from San Agustin in Surigao Del Sur I was hesitant to circle back from Barobo to San Francisco before making my way to Prosperidad. Luckily, Kuya Aljon was easy to talk to and picked me up in Lianga Crossing, cutting the trip from 82 km to just 33 km!

Almost an hour later, we arrived at the registration area of Bega Falls in Brgy. Mabuhay. After registering, it took another 5-minute of the habal-habal ride again before reaching the jump-off point.

At the jump-off point, there will be 396 steps going down to get to Bega Falls. The trek is about 10-15 minutes of descent depending on your pacing, and double that time on your ascent going back.

Moreover, there are several levels to this waterfall, you will reach the lowermost part of the Bega Falls if you keep on going down the paved stairway.

Consequently, if you turn right at a fork a few meters below the lowermost cascade, it will lead you to the cottages that goes down to the grandest of the 4 tiers.

The Point of No Return?

Bega Falls is a 4 tiered waterfall system, each tier has different characteristics and features situated in the heart of Bega River. Moreover, it starts from the water head source at Sitio Ugnop near the Puting Bato Peak in the mountains of Barangay Mabuhay.

After the quick descent, the waterfall was actually a welcome respite and did exceed my expectations. I first thought that it was just a small waterfall, but I was wrong about this one.

Legend has it that a diwata (fairy) seduces and beguiles men and lures them to the waterfall. Also, those who were enticed by the diwata were never to be found again. Subsequently, Bega Falls got its name from the Visayan word biga which means to flirt.

However, other accounts state that the waterfall was named as such because of the demise of a young beautiful woman who was raped and killed in the area. From then on, the waterfall was named Bega because of the conspiracy of lustful thoughts and memories behind it.
