Things to Remember When in Paiyun Lodge – The Yushan Experience
Before our descent from Paiyun Lodge, we experienced our first snow fall in Yushan. What a great time to be alive!
Since this is a two-day hike to the summit of Jade Mountain, resting areas are provided by the Yushan National Park for Mountaineers. One at the trail head is the Dongpu Lodge, and the other one at the higher elevation, about 2kms from theJade Mountain summit, is the Paiyun Lodge.
Paiyun Lodge
This is a three-storey mountain lodge located somewhere 3400 meters above sea level. Also, this lodge is just 2 kilometers away from Yushan Main Peak. This hostel can accept at least 92-100 hikers per day. Equipped with beddings, bathrooms, water closets, a common dining area, kitchen, recreational area, reliable water supply and a decent free internet connection.
They charge 480NTD per person and will be collected at the Paiyun Visitor Center before riding the shuttle vans. For mountaineers doing the two (2) – day Jade Mountain hike, it is mandatory to reserve a bed in Paiyun Lodge as included in the complex permit processing of the Yushan National Park.
A warden manages the area, and will check your mountain permits and passports prior to acceptance inside the accommodation. Setting up of tents is not allowed.

Do I need to reserve a slot for Paiyun Lodge?
- Yes, the Yushan National park is very strict with the mountain permit and one should book atleast three (3) to four (4) months (for overnight trips) up to one (1) month for day hikes, in advance of the target date of climb
Can I buy food or meals at the lodge?
- Paiyun Lodge serves fairly decent meals at certain times of the day, and charges 150NTD to 300NTD each meal. You MUST reserve a week prior to your trip since everything is brought up in here by foot.

- Expect temperature to drop rapidly during the afternoon, and experience below zero temperatures during the morning. We experienced snowfall during our descent, this usually happens during the months of December to early March

- One can also rent a sleeping bag at the Paiyun Lodge but this also needs to be reserved in advance and is passed out by 1500 daily
