Agas-Agas Bridge | Crossing the Country’s Tallest Bridge

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Sogod, Southern Leyte: High over lush greenery, the Agas-Agas Bridge offers panoramic views of the mountains and rivers of Brgy. Kahupian.

This is the highest bridge in the Philippines, located in the province of Southern Leyte. It is known for its impressive height and beautiful views of the surrounding area. The bridge is situated in Brgy. Kahupian, Sogod, Southern Leyte, around 30 minutes away from the town center.

Mortal Danger

After visiting Tagbak Marine Park and Molopolo Beach in Liloan, we hopped into a van headed for the town of Sogod. Upon arrival at the town, one can opt to take Tacloban-bound vans and alight at the bridge, but the challenge is during weekdays, all vans heading for Leyte are always full. Alternatively, I hired a tuktuk to take me back and forth from Sogod to Agas-Agas Bridge, as this is the more practical option.

Agas-Agas Bridge was constructed to connect two mountainous regions, particularly at the Mahaplag-Sogod Section of the Maharlika Highway. This section, at around 300 meters above sea level was just a 1.5-kilometer link, and although a short and winding road, it has taken the lives of many motorists.

This bridge was built for the ease of access around the area which was prone to landslides during heavy rains as the original road was carved along the mountain slopes. Frequent road closures, shutdowns the link from the north to the south resulting in economic losses.

Tallest

Moreover, this is the tallest column bridge that the DPWH has constructed with the aid of the Japanese Government. It stands at a height of approximately 292 feet (89 meters) above the ground. To add, it serves as a vital transportation link in the region, making it easier for people to travel between the eastern and western parts of Southern Leyte.

In addition to its practical function, the Agas-Agas Bridge has become a tourist attraction because of its breathtaking views and the thrill it provides to those who cross it. The surrounding area also offers various outdoor activities and natural beauty for visitors to enjoy. As of September 2023, the zipline was eventually closed due to an accident involving tourists riding it.
