Exploring Cadapdapan and Can-Umantad – The Gems of Candijay, Bohol
There’s more to Bohol than the Chocolate Hills, the white sand beaches of Panglao, venture, centuries old churches, the Tarsier and many more attractions that are in the usual itineraries when venturing into this Visayas gem.
Over a hundred kilometers from Tagbilaran City, quite a number of beaches, caves, rice terraces and a large waterfall awaits. Candijay, a quiet town at the eastern portion of the province, is becoming one of the must visit spots when in Bohol.
Cadapdapan Rice Terraces
On our second day in Bohol, we arrived in Dao Bus Terminal, which is a few blocks away from our hotel, and waited for a Jagna bound commuter van. One can also take the bus, but based on our experience, the time it takes to reach the destination is doubled as compared to vans. Luckily, the van just got full in no time.
After more than an hour, we alighted in front of the town hall of Candijay, a few hundred meters away from Lungsod Daan. There are some motorcycle drivers already waiting to take you to Brgy. Cadapdapan, which we immediately chartered and some 15 minutes later, we arrived in Eleuterio’s Farm.
And there it is, carved in the hilly terrains, the narrow crop walls snaking level after level into an almost abstract yet very beautiful ensemble of terraces. It may not be as high nor as grand as the ones in the Cordillera, but it is beautiful in its own right. Rice terraces are not an unusual sight in Bohol, truth be told, there are also some terraces in the municipalities of Dimiao, Sierra Bullones, Lila and Jagna.
Moreover, if you’re going to ask the locals, they will vote for Cadapdapan Rice Terraces as the most visually appealing. This quiet town is one of the top producers of rice in Bohol, which explains why in Candijay alone, there are a number of rice terraces in the barangays of Abihilan, Lungsoda-an, Tambongan, Luan, Anoling, Panadtaran, Canawa, Cambane and Cadapdapan.
They are irrigated and fed by the head water of Cadapdapan River which flows down into their waterfall which is the Can-umantad Falls. Which can be accessed by foot from Eleuterio’s Farm or by vehicles from the recently finished arterial road, which is more safer as compared from the previous years.
Can-umantad Falls
Just a few minutes away by motorcyle, sloping down from the farm, is the Can-umantad Falls. Recently gaining momentum in the travel itineraries of travelers, this waterfall is also regarded as the highest one in Bohol.
Fed by the Cadapdapan River, this waterfall is a two tiered cascade which measures at around 60 feet high. The main cascade at 45 feet, falls down into a shallow pool, then flows down again into a greenish blue colored deep basin that is ideal for swimming.
The town of Candijay offers other attraction, some of them are Kawasihan Islet Sandbar, Danicop Jorge Brook, Kantaligsok Peak Canawa Cold Spring, Candijay Mangrove Forest and a man-made lake called Boongon Swip.
How To Get There
From Tagbilaran City, take a Jagna or Ubay bound bus/ van and alight at either Lungsoda-an or Poblacion/ Town Hall of Candijay (130php/pax Van). From the main highway, charter a habal-habal (motorcycle) going to Eleuterio’s Farm (300php/pax back and forth), upon arrival in Brgy. Cadapdapan, you will be asked to pay 20php for the Barangay, and also 20php for the registration fee in Eleuterio’s Farm. Cadapdapan Terraces is just around the Farm, while Can-umantad Terraces is accessible via a fifteen minute trek going down, or you can ask your driver to bring you directly down to the waterfall. Parking fee is 10php for motorcycles, 20php for 4-wheeled vehicles.
