Ha Giang, Vietnam’s Far Side of the Moon – Sa Phin Commune
PART 5: Northern Vietnam Adventure Series
Route 2: Life Melody in A Rocky Kingdom
As we stood on top of the Sa Phin Moon Surface, it was like standing at an old chinese painting.
Sa Phin Moon Surface
After a brief visit inside the Hmong King’s Palace, we ventured a little further down into the Sa Phin Valley, some 2 kilometers from the Chinese Border. Another stop over, then we had the Sa Phin Moon Surface to ourselves.
We were soon standing before an unearthly panorama of karst formations in the shape of giant upturned egg cartons. Unlike most mountain ranges in which erosion carves only the surface, the high composition of limestone causes much of the plateau to erode below as well as above the ground.
The result is a surrealistic vista of giant cones, towers, pyramids, caves and sinkholes. Then from down below is mostly desert, which is unbelievable since locals still found a way to cultivate the land and plant crops.
Where is the Sa Phin Moon Surface?
The Sa Phin Moon Surface/ Moonscape is located in Sa Phin in the Dong Van District of Hagiang. This is 9.4kms from the Dong Van town proper and 412kms from Hanoi.
Hanoi, Vietnam: Underneath the Nón Lá – located on the eastern Indochinese Peninsula, this was once a French city often dubbed as the “Paris of the East”, a gateway to a plethora of natural wonders, people, culture and amazing food. From rich forests, karst and tectonic landscapes, towering mountain peaks, UNESCO listed sites, ethnic markets, and effusive local hospitality – let us take you into an adventure of a lifetime up into the northern reaches of Vietnam!
This is my third country visited last March 22 to 26, 2019.
